What to Expect
Parents
- Participating in the Youth Justice Committee (YJC) process should take less than three (3) months for your child, depending on the Agreement
- YJC Volunteer receives your child’s file and contacts you and your child
- YJC Volunteer contacts victims, where appropriate, to hear their story and how they have been impacted
- YJC Volunteers, you, and your child meet at an opening meeting, sanctions are decided and explained to your child who signs an Agreement
- Your child is given a deadline to complete the sanctions
- YJC Volunteers will contact your child regularly to check in on progress on completing the sanctions
- YJC Volunteers, you, and your child meet for a closing meeting, sanctions are reviewed, Agreement is confirmed either successful or unsuccessful
- If the charge came from the Court your child WILL attend their pre-determined court date where the Crown/Judge reviews file. If the youth was successful; the charge will be withdrawn in Court and the youth criminal record will be automatically expunged after a two-year period and there is no formal youth criminal record if your child commits no further crime
- If your child is unsuccessful, the Crown/Judge/Police will review file, sanctions and YJC Members notes to determine if they should be formally charged, given substantive compliance, or sent back to the Extrajudicial Sanctions Program.
Youth
- It should take less than three (3) months for you to complete the program
- Youth Justice Committee (YJC) volunteer will call you, and your parents or guardians to arrange an opening meeting
- YJC volunteer will call the victims, if appropriate, to hear their story and how they were impacted
- At the opening meeting with YJC volunteers, you and your parents or guardians, you will receive sanctions and sign an Agreement to complete the sanctions by an agreed upon date
- A YJC volunteer will contact you regularly to see how you are doing in completing the sanctions
- You will meet again with the YJC volunteers with your parents or guardians to confirm if the Agreement was successful or unsuccessful
- If the charge came from the Court you WILL attend the pre-determined Court date where the Crown/Judge will review your file. If you are successful the charge will be withdrawn in Court and your criminal record will be removed AFTER a two (2) year period and then you do not have a youth criminal record if you do not commit another crime
- If you are unsuccessful, the Crown/Judge/Police will review your file, the sanctions, and notes from YJC volunteers to determine if you will be formally charged, given substantive compliance, or sent back to the Extrajudicial Sanctions Program
Here is what to do!
- Confirm the date, time and place of you meeting with YJC volunteers
- Attend meeting with parents or guardians and receive a copy of the Agreement
- Check email from YJC Volunteer for information needed to complete sanctions
- Complete sanctions by deadline
- Check in with YJC Volunteer to let them know when sanctions are complete
- Confirm date, time and place of closing meeting
- Bring a copy of all completed sanctions to closing meeting
- Sign the Agreement either successful or un-successful
- Confirm Court date with YJC volunteer
- Attend Court date if you received a return date from Court
- Your Extrajudicial Sanctions File is closed
Victims of Crime
- Youth Justice Committee (YJC) volunteer will call you, when appropriate
- Tell your story about the incident and how it impacted you
- Provide a written statement to the YJC volunteer or ask to participate in the meeting with the youth and their parents/guardians
- Ask the YJC volunteer to call you after the youth completes their sanctions
- Restitution may not be a sanction due to the youth’s financial situation
